Goldeneye Source: A Classic Reimagined

GoldenEye64Since I was growing up as a kid, I’ve enjoyed video games and had a fascination of the virtual worlds I played in. The first games I was ever exposed to (from what I remember) was 007 Goldeneye N64. I remember every summer I’d be at my families beach house and would be playing on my brothers N64 at the time on one of the missions in the single player mode or playing against my brother or friends in multiplayer. I had a lot of great memories with this game and it has been quite sometime since I last dusted off and hooked up my N64. I don’t have the space for it to be setup so, I thought to myself maybe I could play it on PC. To my surprise I found a fan-made remake of the games multiplayer. This ‘re-mastered’ game utilizes the source engine (Half Life 2) and the developers recreated fully HD remakes of the classic maps from Rare’s Goldeneye N64 multiplayer and even the single player missions as well that have been reimagined and redone to be able to have more flow in the maps which originally maps in the multiplayer on the N64 were only for four players. So the developers making GE Source is designing the maps to have more ways in and out of areas and much MUCH more detail. If you ever played the original game you will feel right at home and the game will feel instantly familiar. Everything from the maps to the guns to the sounds and the the games OST and authentic and nostalgic. Yes, they could’ve simply just ripped sounds and the midi music from the original ROM but it shows that these developers want a game that is fresh and yet staying original and keeping to its roots. The play style is the same the pace and the movements and the guns spray patterns feel like itsN6 counterparts. Though there is a bit of a learning curve to the games controls because its not on a controller it is on a keyboard and mouse. Also some of the new maps that the developers made have been even taken out of the movie Goldeneye. One of the maps is the Casino from the James Bond film Casino Royal it is pretty much 1:1 with movie!

Goldeneye Source 5.0: Bunker
N64 Goldeneye: Bunker
It is absolutely incredible! Here’s a few screen shots of the game of some of the maps. Just look at the difference between the N64 Bunker and GE Source it is amazing. Exactly how it should look if you have seen the movie it is so accurate and exact! It just blows my mind how a game like this exists and its... yes your not going to believe it FREE! Yes free and depending on your download speed and the power of your computer you can easily get this game running. You just have to have a Steam Account and a download of the Source SDK just go to the Library in your Steam profile at the top then click tools and scroll down till you find Source SDK 2007 and then install. Then install the game. The game is a mod so it won't provide a source SDK like I said you will have to do that yourself. After that exit your Steam then restart it just to make sure nothing gets corrupted. Then simply start playing. You will find right away there are only a few active servers online and you'll begin to have a sense of community because it is a small community of people that just want to play some classic area style shooter like Goldeneye and just have a good old time. I've been playing GE Source for almost about a week and have got my friends to play with online with me and  I have to say this game exceeds all my expectations. When I first saw the Goldeneye Source 5.0 release trailer. I nearly crapped myself with excitement! The only gripe I have with this game is that no many people are playing it. I would love to see more players especially younger players start playing classic shooters. This game has all the elements of the original Goldeneye it is casual and it is nothing but all around fun. People on the servers are friendly and nice and this game makes you feel nostalgic and a sense of community. I recommend anyone to play this it is a wonderful game. Spread the word of Goldeneye Source it is a truly blast from the past and is a real treat to play!
